Our diagram of an example of the Pop Art genre: The Infinity Room by Yayoi Kusama researched variation techniques of the grid - regular, repetitive, and precise - gradually fraying into irregularity. In three dimensional studies - our methodology studied pieces to swarm together – transitioning to a more figural surface or volume.

Design Research - diagram and technique studies

Examining what such a formal study based on techniques of pop-art could yield for an art museum in the Miami Design District, especially one dedicated to Andy Warhol, proved fruitful. We learned that in order to understand the condition of irregularity, regularity must coexist. This led to a creation of two kinds of gallery spaces – those more spatial and irregular, and the highly regular gridded gallery space enclosed by mullions and glazing.

Elevation and Perspective Views

Collaborating with Warhol museum director Eric Shiner, we calibrated the design to fit Miami, the needs of a curator and how best to display Warhol’s work. For our museum proposal we developed three main programs: Artists Studios – which are institutionally integrated, gridded gallery and office space, and larger vessel-like volumes to house both circulation and Warhol’s Time Capsule items in particular. Each of these three systems operate on an independent grid and inter-relating with one another. The result allows for innovation at the compositional, spatial, and programmatic levels both on the exterior and within the museum.
